Web Home Page: The Nyika Plateau, bounded on all sides by steep escarpment, is one of the most beautiful montane plateaux in Africa. The beautiful montane plateaux in Africa. The 3 134 km Nyika National Park encompasses it and is covered by grassland and patches of the lower-lying areas. The best time to see the many plants that grow here in flower from December to March. Plains zebra, warthog, roan, eland, reedbuck, bushbuck and common duiker are the most common game species in the park, with leopard and side-striped jackal also present, but seldom seen. Small numbers of elephant and hippopotamus occur in the lower-lying areas to the north. The birdlife is very varied, with over 350 species, and is particularly good between October and December. In summer this high-altitude area is much cooler than the adjacent lower-lying region, and during the winter months; between May and July, frost occurs regularly. Location: Northern part of Malawi; north of Lilongwe. Access: From Lilongwe take the main road northwards in the direction of Kasungu to Mzuzu via Chikangawa on the M1 (this is a tarred all-weather road, and is in excellent condition); from Mzuzu continue northwards n a tarmac road for abut 63 km to Rumphi, then turn westwards (m24) towards Katumbi, turning right to the park after about 50 km. Chelinda Camp is 60 km from the entrance. A 4x4 vehicle is recommended for travelling the park during the rainy season. There is an airstrip 3 km from Chilinda Camp. Accommodation: Chelinda Camp has 4 4-bed chalets, each with a kitchen, bathroom and lounge, and 6 2-bed rooms (with toilets), with a separate kitchen and dining room and communal ablution facilities. A new 4-bedroomed chalet with bathroom is also available as is a camp with 4 2-bed tents with bathrooms and basic facilities. A 4-bed log cabin 50 km from Chelinda has basic facilities. A youth hostel can take 56 students. Other facilities: 1- to 5-day walking trails; casual walking is permitted; a 280 km network of game-viewing roads; guided night safaris; an information centre' bird-watching hides; trout-fishing; viewpoints; boats for hire; fuel; shop selling basic foodstuffs; bar.
